Asset-based leadership is a choice, an intentional way for you to navigate through your professional life. If you want to be an asset-based leader, you must first get to know your strengths and capabilities. Most of us know our gaps and our shortcomings a lot better than we know our strengths and capabilities. Most of us shy away from zeroing in on and talking about our positive qualities and attributes. But positive self-assessment is the foundation to getting results.

You will be a better leader and a better team player if you are confident of who you are and what you have to offer.

First, take the time to find your Signature Leadership Presence. I call it reducing the blind spot. But how you perceive yourself at work is only one component of a complete self-image. The second step is think about the other gifts and talents you possess. And last, consider how these assets contribute to your overall effectiveness.

The Whole Life Asset Profile Pie Chart

The Whole Life Asset Profile Pie Chart is a tool to help you identify and leverage your unique assets in all areas of your life.

Draw a circle and divide it into six slices: Work, Family, Friends, Community, Hobbies, and Health. Identify at least one asset you contribute to each area of your life.

This pie chart represents YOU. Collectively, the assets associated with each slice reflect what is special about you!

Most people take their assets for granted because they tap into them automatically without much deliberate thought. But all it takes is a moment to mentally recognize and appreciate what you bring to the table. And then, it’s just a short leap to finding new ways to apply those assets in other areas of your life (i.e. all the slices of the pie). For example, if one of your hobbies is playing the guitar, then the asset there may be a carefully tuned ear. Think now about how those keen listening skills can also be used for collaboration and problem-solving at the office and at home.

The goal here is to become fully aware of your amazing and unique array of assets so that you can magnify the best in you. That is the Asset-Based Leadership Advantage.
